I really hate to be stupid but I really need someone's help with the following:
In Ken Warren's book, "Texas Holdem" in the section regarding keeping records, he refers to keeping up with you winning by converting it to big bets. To quote him, "Speaking in terms of big bets also makes it easier to compare how your're doing in different games at varying limits"
What is a big bet, is it the number of hands you win?
Also in relation to winnings, what is BB and BB/HOURS and why are they important to track. |

| A big bet is the larger later round bet you can make in limit poker. For instance if you are playing $3/$6 the Big Bet is $6, if you are playing $20/$40 the big bet is $40. |

I'll take your word for it then. I guess I learned something too
Oh I have a question then. When someone says you should try to win 1 big bet an hour what exactly are they referring to? |

| This means that you should look to have averaged 1 big bet per hour over a poker session. For instance, if you are playing 20/40 for a living and play 8 hours a day, you should make $40 an hour or $320 for each day. |

One thing to keep in mind is that your Big Bet per hour - per session, will not always be positive. Some sessions (days) will be losers and some will be winners.
I track each session by time, starting $, ending $, etc... calculate this into big bet per hour for the session.
Then total all sessions together, total time, total profits and you will get a long term big bet per hour rate. After 100 hours you will have a better understanding how your doing.
I use excel and track everything, running balance, hands, flops seen, win if seen flop, session profits/loses, etc. Also, a chart that shows, running balance and session P/L. The chart really helps... shows your ups and downs. I like to call them corrections. Just like the markets, you can have some big upswings, but you know it's not sustainable. |

Yeah I prefer to use time as my reference and stick to the figures. I don't see the point in speaking in terms of BB if you play for leisure, which is why I think about things in cash terms.
I'd prefer to end up being up after every session, but some days the cards jsut don't come for you. |
